THE EDUCTION BILL

WARNING TO THE LORDS. (Received November 8, 11.37 p.m.) LONDON, November 8. Speaking at Aldershot yesterday the Earl of Portsmouth (Under-Secretary for War) warned the House of Lords that if the bishops destroyed the Educar tion Bill the Liberals would not permit tho matter to drop. LORD JERSEY’S AMENDMENT. LONDON, November 8. Lord Jersey’s amendment cabled yesterday, which was carried by 133 votes to 83, was to.delete the , four-fifths qualification from subsection a, section 1, of clause 4. Tho subsection provided originally for extended facilities being given for religious instruction, provided the local authority is satisfied, after holding a public local inquiry, “that the parents of at least four-fifths of the children attending the school desire those facilities.” This correcting message renders more intelligent Lord Ripon's remark that the amendment made the clause nugatory.
