Mr G. G. f'tead, of Christchurch, returned from Australia to Now Zealand by the Manuka yesterday. At tho Berhamporo Baptist ChmAh yesterday Mass Ada Hammond, of Wellington, was married to Mr Charles Berry. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. T. Keith Ewcn.

At the Terrace School this evening a welcome will be given to Mr G. MpcTnorran, the headmaster, on return from Europe. Pupils, ox-pupils, and friends are'invited to attend. Further leave of absence from his Parliamentary ditties for a week, oh account of ill-health, has been granted to Mr C. H. Izard, Mr Kirkbrido has been released from attendance for ten dajts. . Mr G. A. Harvey, for twenty years past in the employ, of Farmer and Co., Limited, Victoria House, who is leaving shortly for Now Zealand (says the Sydney “Telegraph”), has been presented by his fellow-employees, with a souvenir of regard. - , Mr Frederick Lemon and Miss Ada Hale, daughter of Mr W. W. Hale, were married yesterday. The ceremony was performed- by the Rev. P. W. Fairdough, at the Wcaley Church, Taranaki street. The bride was attended by Misses Maggie Lott and Maggie Jonkinson, and Elsie Jones and Ivy Howell. Mr Rickman was best man. At the conclusion of tho service there was a reception at the residence of the bride’s parents in Tasman street. Mr Northend Gooder. who had lived in Wellington since 1841, is dead, aged 72 years. Mr Gooder waa closely connected with the affairs of the Wesley Church, in jvlxjdi he took keen interest. He leaves a widow and a family of ten —Mrs J. H. Smith and Mrs A. Newbold (Wellington), Mrs J. H. Wilson (Christchurch).-Air F. J. Gooder (of the firm of Messrs Turnbull, -Hickson and Gooder), Mr N. J. Gooder (of the firm Of Messrs Rash and Gooder), Mr R. Gooder (Eltham), Mr _ Jaboz Gooder, and Misses Eva, Eunice, and Amy Gooder.

The wedding took place at Wesley Church, Taranaki street, yesterday afternoon, of Mr Alfred A. Bennett (of Messrs Atkinson and Bennett, solicitors), son of Mr A. J. Bennett, and Miss Mabel K, Varooe, only daughter of Mr John Varooe. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. P. W. Fairolough. The bride, given away by her father, was attended by Misses Gladys and Olive Bennett (sister and cousin of the bridegroom) and Miss Vera Teasdale. Mr V. R. Bennett was best man. Mr W. J. Harland played a wedding march as the party left the church. A receptioriwns afterwards held at Searl's, Cuba street. ’

A cablegram tho other day briefly announced the death of the Very Rev. Charles Hairy at, Dean of Adelaide. Australian newspapers now to hand state that deceased was bofn in Loudon in. 1827. Ho came of » family famed in literary and naval circles. , His grandfather (Joseph Marryat), a ■wealthy West Indian merchant, sometime member of Parliament for the boroughs of Sandwich and Horsham, had two sons, Frederick and Charles. " The former entered the British Navy, and distinguished himself for bravery. In latSr life (ho was said not to have written anything until his forty-fifth, year) he attained distinction in the world, of letters as the talented author of “Peter Simple,” “Midshipman Easy,” and other delightful and still popular stories of i the sea. The brother Charles, of Parkfiald, Middlesex, married Caroline, daughter of Charles Short,' Of Woodlands, Warblington, Hants, and sister of the late Right Rev. Augustus Short. D.D., first Bishop of Adelaide. Charles Marryat the elder became father of two sons, both- of whom rose to eminence. One was the Dean of Adelaide, and the other was Admiral Joseph Marryat, who during the Crimean war, in October, 1854, while still only a lieutenant, won in Klnhurn Bay the plaudits of the allied fleets.
