RACING NOTES

(By “Advance.”) FIXTURES. SEASON 1900 -7. Oct. 10 and 11—Napier Park R. C. Spring. Oct. 10 and 11—Otaki Maori K.C. Spring. Oct. 10 and 13—Dunedin J.G. Spring. Oct. 17 and 20—Wellington lt.C. Spring. Oct. IS and 19—North Otago J.C. Spring. Oct. 24 and 2o—Gore K.C. Spring Meeting. Oct. 25 and 23 —Poverty Bay T.C. Spring. Oct. 25 and 23—Masterton K.C. Spring Meeting. THE STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. The weights for the Stewards’ Handicap, the most valuable sprint race in the colony, appeared on Friday of last week, and acceptances are due on the 19th lust. Achilles heads the list with 10.5, one pound more than he received a year ago when he declined the contest. Solution (9.13) is likely to remain in Australia. Vladimir (8,13), Signalman (8.13), and Porcelain (8.13) all have some form to recommend them. Of the three the writer prefers Porcelain, perhaps quite as fast as the other pair, with the galloping at Raudwick to sharpen him up. \ Jadimir won the race two years ago, carrying 9.0, and last year failed with 9.3. Master Alix (8.9) has lOlbs and Munjeet (8.6) 71bs more than a year ago, when they filled the places behind Solution (7.9). The last named went up 32.b5. Multifid (8.8) sprinted well last spring, but has been trained for th© Cup. With an interrupted preparation, however, he would be more likely to see the sprint race out than that run over the longer distance. The writer has no particular fancy for the seven horses whose names appear at the head of the list, except Master Alix, bub would not be surprised to find the winner included in tho second seven. The names are Cross Battery (8.7), who only missed once out of four starts last season when she was beaten by Pas Soul in the Cre-ssy Welter Handicap, six furlongs, at Riocarton in tho spring. At the summer meeting sho won tho Filly Stakes, six furlongs, carrying 7.8, in linin 16-Jsecs, and the Fiying -Handicap, five furlongs, carrying 8.2, in Imin 3£secs. In the Great Easter, run over seven furlongs, sho carried 7.0, and won by two lengths in Imin 27-Jsocs. There is no doubt Cross Battery is a brilliant mare, and 8.7 is by no means a burden for a four-year-old to carry. She must therefore be labelled dangerous. Munjeet (8.6) is one of the Yaldhurst representatives, the others being Porcelain (8.13) and Huascar (7.4). The stable has not been lucky in the race since Machine Gun won it. That horse and Munjeet both filled third place the last two years. King Billy (8.6) is about in his right place. Petrovna (8.6) has the same weight she carried last year, when‘ she finished out of a place. She receives 31bs from Master Alix. Taking their Dunedin autumn form as a guide, there .appeal's to be very little between this pair of well-performed sprinters. In the Publicans’ Handicaps, six furlongs, Master Alix tried to concede Petrovna 51bs. and was beaten two lengths. The following day they met on level terras in. the Railway Plate, six furlongs, Master Alix beating Petrovna two lengths. Savoury (7.13) and Chivalry (7.11) are at present in Sydney, but it appears likely that they will return. Chivalry was unplaced last year with 7.10. Both horses have shown- good form in Australia, especially Savoury," who was beaten at Randwick when carrying 7.9 in Imin ITSsecs. Ho also claims ah engagement in the New ,Zealand Cup, which is run the same day as the Stewards’ Handicap. Ballarat (7.10) failed twelve months ago with-21bs less on her back. She has a‘nice handy im- ; post, and should be inoludled in the probables. Sir Tristram (7.10) is the b st of the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s lot. The stable is also represented by Zimmerman (.7.9), "'wirrai (7.3), and Golden Gate (6.11). Sir Tristram finished up well last autumn with a double win at Manawatu. On this form he is well in with 7.10. Golden Gate was a smart two-year-old, and has a light impost. Pas Seul (7.4), Fireiron (7.0),' Munjista (6.11), Franc (6.10),, and Volodin (6.7) have some ■ form to recommend them. At present the .race presents a most open appearance. The winner may be included in the following half dozen:— Master Alix, Cross Battery, Bang Billy. Petrovna, Savoury, and Sir Tristram. BETTING MARKET. Messrs Barnett and Grant report tile following business on tho

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S SPRING -MEETING. Sir Morse has declared the following weights for events to he run. on the opening day of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting:— City Handicap.—Paritutu 9.5, Sootty 8.12, Landlook B.IX, Gladstone 8.11, Leonator 8.8, Rustique 8.5, Cambrian 8.0, Bourrasque 7.12, Ironmould 7.9, Apologue 7.8. ' Strathavon. 7.8, Waipuna 7.8, GlenuUin 7.5, Delania 7.2, Flameu 7.2, Celtic 7.2, Master Delaval 7.1, Swagsman 7.0, Geordie 7.0, Claremont 6.12, Zuleika 6.12, Bully 6.12, Lady Nell 6.9. . Hurdle Race.—Hautapu 12.1, Cuiragno 11.10, Defender 10.10, Swagsman 10.6, Dolores 10.5, Lady* Huno 9.12, Silica 9.10, Aqua Regia 9.5, Kruger 9.2, Katoa 9.1, Sir Regel 9.0, Chief Steward 9.0, Lady Clare 9.0, Calle Iris 9.0. CHATTER. ' The entries for the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting, to be held on Thursday and Friday of nest week, are very satisfactory. Polyanthus, Gold Crown, Submarine, Roseal and other well-known performers are in the lists. Handicaps for the first day are due on the 13th. Hydrant’s first display in Sydney, which formed the subject of an inquiry by the Australian Jockey Club Committee, is thus referred to by Terlinga, who represented the “Australasan” in Svdney:—"A good-looking New Zealand horse, called Hydrant, ran in the Eosehiil Hurdle Race. He only had 61b

over the weight he carried into second place in the New Zealand Grand National Hurdle Race, and would have won easily if he had jumped even moderately. Whether it was the horse's fault 'or the jockey’s that Hydrant bucked over several hurdles and ran out wide all the way I know no;. Perhaps jumping the reverse way bothered Hydrant. After the last hurdle the jockey lost all control, and appeared to be driving for a mislaid stirrup. With a Chevally or a Burn on his back, Hydrant should lose the horse that beat him at Saturday’s weights. On the second occasion they met Hydrant beat Satnivader.

At the Sylvia Park dispersal sale, Mr W. E. Biciwiil, the Wairarapa sportsman, gave 400 guineas for Stepfeldt (Nordenieldt —Steppe) who had a hlly foal at foot by San Francisco and in foal to the, same sire. The filly, named Culmination, was put into work at Riccarton last season, but was thrown ou.[, of training. The full brother, a year younger, named Elevation, made his first appearance at Hastings last week when he ran second to F.ncry in a big field and at present it looks as if Mr BidwilTs enterprizo in buying such a Well-bred mare will prove a successful venture. Mr Bidwill sent Stepfeldt to Birkenhead, the result being a colt, now a year old, who has been named Gravitation. Stepfeldt visited the Orme horse again last season. In tho Melbourne Oup Noreeu meet s Dividend on a stone and a half better terms than in the Randwick P*ate, in which the horses named finished firs; and second. Bomfonn fulfilled the mission of tho Yaldhurst team by winning the Breeders’ Plate, which was worth about 1300 sovs to the winner. This cut of the prize money would more than pay expenses of the trip. Prior to leaving Mr Mason expressed th© opinion in his usual modest manner that the team

was a scratch one, Bcmiform being the only one he expected to win with. This forecast proved to bo an absolutely correct one.

The Randwick Plate winner, Noreen, is a half-siscer to Marvel Loch, and Wi—ordinary luck should secure Cup honours for True Blue. She is engaged in the Melbourne Cup with 7.9 and Caul-, field Gup with 7.7. Noreen is owned and trained by T. F. Scully, who had Maniapoto in his charge at Randwick Last season Noreeu got in th© Sydney Oup, two miles, with the minimum weight and won that event. Sho also ran third in the Doncaster Handicap. At Rosehill last month Noreen carried 8.4 and won the Spring Handicap, one mile and a-quarter in 2rain 9sec. At Rosehill last month Berthior carried 10.0 to victory in the Rydalmere Mile, running the distance in Imin 45 sec. Although Borfhier missed the Epsom, for which he was sent out , first favourite, there is no doubt he is a great sprinter. On the second day of tlie meeting he won tho Shorts, six .furlongs, carrying 9.5 in Imin 14Jsec. In the High Weight Handicap on Saturday Berthier carried 12.2 and ran three, quarters in Imin IGsec. H© is by Facile (eon of Carbine) who was, more of a stayer than a sprin.er. He was placeu in the A.J.C. Plate, three miles, Deal ing Battalion and True Blue. Nominations for all handicap events at the Taratahi-Carter.on Racing Club's meeting, to be held on November 9 and 10. close on the 20th inst. The attention of owners engaged at the Mascerton meeting and others is directed to the programme appearing on this page.

The Hon. J. D. Ormond fiends the list of winning owners at Wanganui anu Hastings. • The withdrawals of Auratus and Zetland from the New Zearind Cop issi week, left thirty-four hoiees in the two mile race to be run in three weeks lone. Two further payments have to ho made in connection therewith, six- sovs on October 19 and 10 sovs on October 31. Those who witnessed the performance:at the Wanganui and Hastings meetings' appear to generally agree that of the horses ' seen out at th© meetings named the most likely to pull off the big handicap are Armistice and Bia-m erang. There is no doubt Armistice Ia great stayer. She has the ha-ndy impost of 7.5, and will’be ridden, by A. Oliver, a capable horseman. Boomc-iai-g was seen out twice at Hastings. Jn the King Edward Handicap h© finished ih a place behind Zimmerman and Lady Warwick and was among the field that finished behind Mystification in the ’ Spring Handicap on the second day. Boomerang, Lyrist, Zimmerman, Ghoorka, Flamen, Star Roso, Submarine and La Torpedo figure among the entrants for the Wellington meeting next month. After this fixture the list of probable starters for the Cup may be further’ reduced. At present Paritutu, Armistice and Boomeraifg are in most request with backers. Seventeen two-year-olds contested the Juvenile Handicap on the second day of the Hastings meet ng. This number is said to he a record for the colony. The- winner. Finery, was bred by her owner, Mr T. H. Lowry, by Birkenhead —Bijou (by Medallion —Sapphire) who won the same race in Mr Lowry’s colours in tKo Spring of 1895. Bijou has been rather an unlucky matron. After producing Eijoutry and La Bijouterie, she had a bolt foal to Torpedo, which died. Since then she has missed three seasons out of four. Last season she was mated with Royal Fusilier. There is a two-year-old colt by Mensohikoff—Problem named Do Witte in work at Yaldhurst. He will probably bo soon out for the first time at Riccarton next month. Mr Stead gave 300 guineas for this youngster at th© Wellington Park sale. He also purchased Problem, with foal by Seaton Delava!, and served by the same sire for 340 guineas. Swagsman . (Ben Godfrey—Problem), winner of the hurdle handicaps at the recent Avondale meeting, is a halfbrother to the Metropolitan winner, Solution. Euclid (by Seaton Delaval oi Soult—Problem), has been a failure on the turf so far. He is to do stud duty this season, and according to a Christchurch paper is likely to be broken to harness later on. . Prophesy, a halfbrother by Phoebus Apollo, was one oi the best two-year-olds in Westralia last season. ,

The Kurow Jockey Club’s annual meeting was held on the 4tb inet. The totahsator figures showed an - increase of £336 compared with last year. Mr R. O. Campbell, owner of Tirol©, won a Maiden Handicap with Khama, by Stepniak—Mountain Maid, a daughter of Perkin-Warbeck 11., who won a lot of races at Otago country meetings ten years back. Mandrel, who accounted for five opponents in the District Hack Handicap, was sired by the St. George Sierra* horse Mount Royal, who was racing at the same time as Mountain Maijr The principal event, worth 5-5 sovs to the winner, went to Buccleuch (Benzoin —Reverie) the , four-year-old half-brother to Dnndas and Welbeck. Ho put down a fancied candidate in Mr Buckley’s Lady Landon. Beau Seaton pulled up lame- The Waikawa Stud sire claimed the winner of the District

Hack Handicap in which The Noriilan put down eight others. Lunairo (Ravenscraig—Luna) dam of The Norman, won a i-ace as a three-year-old, but was net a success on tho turf. In the Jockey dub Handicap Rosebioom (Otffigado—Primrose) bad no difficulty in defeating Cathron, who carried 171 b overweight. The New Zealand Cup candidate Stepdancer (Stepdancer—Pibroch) won the principal event at the Ohoka-Eyl-0-ton meeting on the 14th. Her only opponent, Royal Crown, with J. McCombo in tho saddle, was made favourite. Tlioy ran together all the way, ’Stepdancer winning by a- neck in Imin 45 2-sseo.

Patty Pan (Goodbye—Foresight) who failed to show any form at Amberiey and Ashburton, beat four others in a Maiden Hack Race. Volodia (Btepmak —Waimate Maid) a winner at Amberiey and Ashburton, was successful in tho Fiying Handicap, live funongs, in which she carried 9.10 and won easily by a length in Imin 21-sec. T. Sheenau, tho well-known breeder-owner-trainor, won a race with the first of tho progeny of Greek Maid (Musketry—Psyche) named Athena, a three-yeur-old filly by Ben Trovato (Apremont—Flattery). She put down four other fancied candidates for the Mandeville Welter Handicap and paid £8 2S. Helion (Phaeton —Polly) accounted for the Hurdles and Lady Faulkner (by Johnny Faulkner) the District W’elter.

The best advertisement Hotchkiss has had in Australia has been Bine, who has proved a great stud success. Dunmoro (Hotchkiss —Dunoon) who won a Maiden Handicap at Ellerelie as a three-year-old, is located at Bundorberg at a fee of five guineas. Prank Higgotc brought back from Blenheim with him tho Merrie England gelding Truthful, who won a Welter Handicap at Riverla'nds last week. Truthful was successful in the same race a year ago. A Sydney , scribe reports the death of Florrio, who died foaling ■ at Messrs Brown’s stud near WTiitt-ngham, where she, was on a visit to Sir Foote, With their old stable, mate, Albicore, who, a couple of days back, unluckily produced a dead foal to Sir Trietram. Florrie was a very handsome daughter of Tasman, and was bred in Now Zealand by Mr Dan O’Brien, Who brought her to Australia some years ago with her brother Launceston. Subsequently Mr O’Brien sold Florrie to Mr Hall, for whom she won» the S.T.C. Birthday Cup. Florrio was a _ half-sister to the famous sprinter Machine Gun ; her dam, Rubina, who won a long string of facet for Mr O’Brien in New Zealand, was •by Kingsborough from Etiquette (imp.), by Caractacus, and was bred ait Bylong by Mr John Lee.
