A cablegram' from Adelaide announces the death of Sir Samuel Davenport, aged eighty-four years. The delegates to the annual conference of the Municipal Association, who aro now in Wellington, will bo entertained at luncheon to-day at Bellevue Gardens by his Worship tho Mayor, the Hoh. T. W. Han vey, who are leaving' the Wellington employ of tho A.M.P. Society 7, have received presentations from tho staff, Mr Burnes, after twenty-throe years with the society, is joining,Mr A. S. Johnson in the business of indent agents. Mr Harvey, whoso sorvica with the - A.M.P. Society lasted eight years and a half, is entering the employ of Hcears Griffiths and Co., at Blenheim.

Mr Bernard Von Hotter, who disappeared outside the Heads in an open boat on Friday last, and has not since been heard of, was a sou of a gentleman (believed to have been connected with a distinguished German family), who fox; many yeans was a clerk in tho Thames Host Office. Preparations are on foot in Wellington to organise a reception for Messrs Devlin and Donovan, the Irish envoys who aro to visit New Zealand shortlyAt a preliminary mealing hold last night in St. Patrick's Hall, it was resolved to communicate with Dunedin, Christchurch, and Auckland With a view to arranging an itinerary for the colony, and later on to call a public mooting for the purpose of forming an esocutivo committee to prepare a suitable welcome. lb is anticipated that the visitors, who are. at present in Australia, will reach New Zealand in about six weeks. They will probably arrive at the Bluff and spend about a month addressing meetings, concluding their tour nt Auckland, whence they will sail for - America. Mr Montague Laing, for some year* past joint manager (with. Mr Maudsley) of the Wellington branch, of Messrs Sargood, Son, and Even, who has been promoted to a similar position in the London house, was entertained at dinner by the staff at the Hotel Arcadia last evening. The chair was occupied by Mr P. R. Sargood, head of the firm, who is at present visiting Wellington on business. The chief feature of the evening was the presentation to Mr Laing by Mr San-good (on behalf of tho staff) of a very- handsome and valuable silver casket, inlaid with greenstone, and having pendant from each of the four corners a grecristone “tiki," the whole being surmounted with a solid silver kiwi in full relief. In making the presentation. Mr Sargood referred in flattering terms to Mr Laing 1 # ability and his long and faithful service with the firm, which was delighted to have such a man to take up the responsibilities in London. H© wished! him all success and happiness for the future. Mr Laing replied in suitable terms, thanking the staff very heartily for the handsome present they had made him. Tho health of “the Firm" was proposed by Mr Bishop and responded to by Mr Sargood. Mr C. 11 Maudsley formally welcomed Mr:H. CL Tewsley (Mr Laing’s successor) and pro* posed his health. Songs, recitations, etc.,Were contributed by Mcesi-s Melbourne, Montgomery, Hendemm, Brown, Bishop, and Green. Mr Laing leaves for Sydney on route for England on Saturday next. Prior to last evening’s presentation the office staff presented Mr Laing .with an illuminated address.
