Mr Milward. chief electrician to tho P; eific Cable Board, who is making Ids annual visit of inspection, stated in an interview that, roughly, the Pacific cable was getting about one-third of tho business. If one-half was secured, tile present loss would bo turned into a profit. -Air Milward said ho did not think there was any likelihood of a reduction ol rates under existing conditions. He pointed out that about 1)3 per cent, of the messages were in cede, each code word representing about four ordinary words, so that tho sender paid only about ninepcnco per word. Speaking personally, Air Alihvard said ho did not think tho proposed "pooling” arrangements with tho Eastern Extension Company would eventuate.
