LAWN TENNIS.
THE MASTERTON TOURNAMENT, Spkciai, to the “ N.Z. Times.” ALA STERTON, January 33, Favoured with excellent woafhcr the .M.wti-rton teifnis tournament was concluded this afternoon without a hitch. The leading spirits were Nelson Bunting, Cecil Cox and the itev. Dean .McKenna, and these three can " nan " a meeting as well as any trio in Now Zealand. The courts were _ better than last year, though there is still room for improvement. A large number of spectators attended, and the club should reap coaniderablo financial benefit. Parker again; won all the championships without losing a sot. It was an interesting match between him and Cox in the final, but the issue was never in doubt. Though Cox played well, the placing of the champion waa too good for him. Pearce, of Terauka, showed himself to lie a rising player. His play showed an undoubted advance. His "backhand" is his weak spot at present. Quill of Christchurch, hardly found tho court® to his liking, but ho is a player who will ho heard of in tho future, as his style ■s good. Miss Powdrell won three prizes. Her hardest game was against Muc Campbell, in tho isinglca. Mm X > ayno was rather underrated in tho handicap events, as she is playing almost as well as over. She annexed tho Handicap bungles, though Mrs Wagg ran her very closely in tho final. The latter ladv, who is a member of tho Hurt Club Is rapidly developing into a really good player, and but for a nervous start would probably have won this event. Probably tho most promising lady of all those competing was Miss it. U’ellwood, of Hastings. Her stylo is easy, elegant and effective, and sho has all tho makings of a future champion of Now Zealand. Hunter was lucky to win the Handicap Singles by one point from Pearce as his last stroke struck the net and rolled over. Tho Second Grade Hauoicftp was won by Wcybonrno, a Taranaki school boy. who displayed a knowledge of placing that would have done credit to some of his seniors. Ho and MBs Westnip only lost the final of the Handicap Combined Event by one stroke Of tho other ladies perhaps the best form w.*m shown by the Aliases Booth who possess excellent forehand strokes. Several of tho players leave to-morrow to compete in tho Nelson championships next week.
