CITY POLICE COURT.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30. (Before Dr A. McArthur, S.M.) One first-offending inebriate was convicted am! di-cbnrged, and three others fined in email sums ranging from 6s to 10s. John Burke, a second offender, was convicted and discharged. Ho promised to leave for the country immediately. Cyrus Arthur A unison was charged with insobriety and with being on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order. Sub-In-spector O’Donovan explained that this was the first time accused had been found in a hotel since the order was nuule, and ho had not been up for drunkenness since June of last year. Dr McArthur convicted and discharged him on both charges, with a caution. For travelling on the Mapounka from Picton to Wellington without paying his fare, John Fraser was fined os (the price of the passage), in default* twentyfour hoims’ imprisonment.

Walter Lynch was remanded, to appear at Palmerston Xorth. on the 31st, on a charge of failing to comply with an order of the Court to pay 10s per week towards tho support of his illegitimate child. Bail was allowed. On the application of Ohief-Detcctivo McGrath two charges of theft against Samuel McShane were withdrawn. He stated the principal witness was seriously ill, and was not likely to bo able to appear for some considerable time. Edwin McGuire was fined 20s, with costs (12s), in default three days’ imprisonment, for assaulting Charles Bird on September 23rd.

George Henry Hunt and John Lewis Rees, charged with stealing ferns at Karori, belonging to tho Hon C. J. Johnston, were convicted and discharged. Annie Doyle (or Power) was ordered to pay 7s Gd per week to Annie Matthews for tho support ot her child. Jack Kirk was sent to gaol for two months for assaulting Elsie Tucker. Mr A. H. Barnett appeared for complainant, ASSAULT ON WOMEN. David McKay, represented by Mr Jellicoo, was charged with, assaulting Alice Gapes on tho Orangi Kupapa road Karori, on October 18th. Complainant said she and her daughter were proceeding to their home, which was close to the' Karori road, when a man came behind them, put his hands over witness’s eyes, and threw her and her daughter on the road They both screamed, and some people cam >to tho rescue. Accused was pointed out as the person, and witness and her daughter both swore ho was tho man. The defence was that McKay heard the women scream, and went to their assistance. Mr Jellicoo asked that the case ho sent to a jury owing to the conflict of evidence. Dr McArthur would not grant 1 this. Ho said he was perfectly satisfied accused assaulted complainant. Ho would bo sentenced to two months’ hard labour. Mr Jellicoo. was given permission to appeal from the decision on tho facts. Bail, as before, was granted—self in £-30 and two sureties each in £25. CHARGES OF THEFT. Robert Prust, alias Priest, who pleaded guilty last week to two charges of theft, and who was remanded for sentence, was further charged with breaking aud entering the Wellington Club on tho Bth inst., and stealing clothing valued at £3 ss. Evidence was given by employees of the club concerning clothing—principally overcoats—they had lost; and by a second-hand dealer named Alexander Dimdoro (Manners street), who deposed to buying two overcoats (one of which was produced) from accused for 12s. At the conclusion of evidence accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. He reserved his defence. Chief-Detective McGrath said he was not satisfied with tho dealer who had purchased the coats, and ho would not ask for an order for tho money to be restored. Dr McArthur concurred. Accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment (cumulative) on each of tho other two charges.
