A Press Association telegram from ,Dunedin states that, a public presentation was made yesterday to Mr G. M. Burlinson, superintendent of the Industrial School, who, with the boys of tho institution, leaves to-day for the new school at Levin. Tho Mayor presided, and with the Primate and leading citizen:!, spoke highly of tho work done by Mr Burlinson, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr J. F. M. Fraser said Mr Burlinson was practically going to establish a modem homo for tho homeless—-a modern agricultural homo such as they had never had in the colony—and ho beiieved he would turn out such boys as Would bo able to go to the fanners and 'teach them what they did not know'. Mr Burlinson was presented with a travelling-bag, pipes, etc., and a purs© vf sovereigns.

News was received at Christchurch yesterday that Captain F. W. Hutton, F. 8.5., iied on board the steamer Eimutaka just before the vessel reached Capetown. Tho deceased was president of the Now Zealand Institute and Curator of tho Christchurch Museum. He Was born in Lincolnshire in 1836, and educated at Southwell and tho Royal Naval Academy, Gosport. Failing to gdt an appointment in the navy, he entered the merchant service in 1851, but afterwards studied civil engineering. In 1855 ho entered the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and went to tho Crimea. He served also in China, in India through tho Mutiny, at Malta and in Ireland. In 1865 Captain Hutton came to Now Zealand, and was appointed by the Provincial Government of Auckland to report upon certain gold and coalfields. Subsequently ho reported upon tho defences of the Now Zealand harbours. Captain Hutton was successively Assistant Geologist to tho Geological Survey, teacher of Natural Science in Wellington College, and in 1873 Provincial Geologist of Otago. In 1877 ‘he was made Professor of Natural Science in tho University of Otago, and in 1879 Professor of Biology at Canterbury College, afterwards becoming Curator at tho Christchurch Museum. Ho wrote several books, including a “ Class Book of Elementary Geology ” and “ Studies in Biology for New Zealand Students.”
