AN INAUSPICIOUS OPENING. RAIN STOPS PLAY. The opening of the cricket season on Saturday afternoon at the Basin Reserve) was inauspicious bo far as the weather was concerned, rain stopping play for the day shortly after half-past three. Previous to this also the light was anything hut good. A large number of spectators were present who shared in tho disappointment of the cricketers when stumps had to ho drawn thus early, particularly as the matches cannot bo resumed until Saturday week. The wicket was soft and treacherous, and consequently tho bowlers had a day out, none of the scores in the three senior matches that were .played totting up to anything like what should have been the case with fair condition's. On No. 1 ground Phoenix met Wellington, and going to the wickets first the former first the former lost five wickets for 33 runs. Playing on No. 2 ground against Midland, the Wellington College Old Boys knocked up 44, but lost six wickets in the effort. The Gasworks eleven were pitted against Newtown on No. 3 ground, and baiting first fared badly, their total for seven wickets only reaching 32.
