RIFLE SHOOTING.

SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS. Weather condition-" were a? severe at Trcntham on Saturday axTcmcon as in town, and the 211 volunteers who went out to the range had a time. Rain fell in torrents, and the low-lying ground of Trcntharn was under water. Hi piaccn tho usual track to the. ranges could not be used. Something should be done to drain n it the water which lies for such i •a length of time about tho shooting mounds. On an average two hum.red volunteers t r o out to Trenthmn everv Saturday, ami their health and convenience ought to bo . considered. The target {reaches need .attention also. The full complement of targets is always in use, which means tho attendance of between twenty-five' and thirty markers. W ater drains into the trench from the hills at it« rear, and, mixing with the clayey earth, c-oon works into an oozy batter, in which tho markers havo to stand tor esomo hours. If the trench were bricked, mark up the value of the shots each week would bo catered for in a much better style than is now the case. Tlie immediate expenditure of a few pounds on tho Trcntharn range would be appreciated by the volunteers of tho district.

Volunteer offtcers seem to be taking a keener interest in shooting than formerly. fourteen being present at Trontliam on Saturdiv.
