(By “Advance.”) fl,t the inaugural meeting of the Carterton Friendly Societies’ snorts, to bo held on Boxing Day, the prnoipal event is the Friendly Societies’ Handicap, of three distances, for prizes aggregating £ls. Tho ■ 120 yards hurdles is worth £2 15s and the half-mile £4, T. Craig, tho New Zealand amateur champion hurdler, is unlucky to miss a trip to an Australasian meeting on account of a mishap. Ross should win one or both walks, and Burk the ono and three miles. In the half-mile he may go down before the Victorian Wheatley. The writer fancies AAudmcr, of New South Wales, who toured this colony last season, for tho quarter and Nigel Barker, if ho starts, for the 100 and 220 yards events. F. E. Drake and IT. S. Williams, who will represent this colony in tho spring event, finished first and second respectively in the 220 yards event at Christchurch last March. They are hardly up to Australasian championship form.

A proposal was made that several oi the events should bo struck off, but motion to this effect was negatived. It was decided to add three amateur events to the tho distances being 100yds, 220yds, and*4.4oyds ; prizes to be £-3 3s and £1 Is, provided there bo six starters. The nomination foe was fixed at 2s and tho acceptance at 2s. Mr AlcLcod stated that ne was prepared to present a gold medal_ for the winner of the quoits competition; Air McHattio stated that ho would give a -old medal for the competitor_ making tho fastest time in tho tree-felling contest; Air J. 13. AlcKenzie stated that ho would give a gold medal for most noints in tho dancing events; and the Society decided to present a gold medal for fastest time in tho hewing competition.
