HUTT RAILWAY AND ROAD IMPROVEMENT ACT.
(To tho Editor, "N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—A wrong impression of my attitude towards clause 3 of tho above measure may bo created by your report of the proceedings in the House last night, when the Bill was finally disposed of. From the first I songht to exclude the operation of this clause in the borough of Onslow altogether. I pointed out that wo light the road by electric current beyond Kaiwarra at the present time. Further, I drafted a danse which would have met the difficulty but this with, the covering letter met with determined hostility on the first and second readings. We all know the fate of Mr Barber’s amendment providing for the mil© limit, and that the clause left the Lower House for the Legislative Council unaltered. When it ’ reached that chamber w© thought we would make a final effort to save an entrance into our borough at any rate. We accordingly interviewed the Minister in charge of the Bill and submitted our plan of various proposed tram routes; and as it was found 15 chains would give us the connection. we asked for a modification of the clause sufficient to secure us that much. It was quite clear that to ask for more would bo to got nothing, in other words, it was a case of take half a loaf or get no bread, I am, etc., R. B WILLIAMS. Oct. 26.
