In tho absence of tho vice-regal household staff, his Excellency the Governor, with Captain Braithwaitc, A.D.G., and Air H. C. AA aterfield (private secretary) are -staying at tho AVcllington Club. Airs D. Inwood, probably the oldest of tho pioneer band who arrived in 1850 (says a.Press. Association telegram from Christchurch) died on Thursday. Sho camo to tho colony with her husband and family in the Sir George Seymour, which anchored at Lyttelton on December 17th, 1850. Air Inwood died years ago.

Tho death occurred at Oamaru on Thursday of William McHutchcson. Bom in Scotland in 1810. deceased entered tho S.cotch Inland Revenue Department early in life, and continued therein till 1862, when ho came to Now Zealand and settled in Christchurch. Twenty years ago ho removed to Oamaru, where ho had lived ever since. Ho leaves a large family, twenty-six grandchildren and five great-grand-children. A son is Chief Postmaster at Timaru.

Mr James Pccle, a well-known Now Zealand artist, died at New Brighton yesterday (says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch), tho result of a paralytic stroke. He ceased was at one time manager ct the Bank of Now Zealand at luingiora, but afterwards took up painting as a profession. Ho won the first prize and gold medal of tho Victorian Society of Arts with his famous picture of the Otira Gorge, wbieh was acquired by that society. Some of bis works have also been secured by tho Canterbury Society of Arts, and form part of its permanent collection.
