Canton, with its million is a queer place. The huge wall surrounding it. fifteen feet .to twenty-five feet wide, is six miles, m circuit, the whole being filled up with a maze of narrow lanes. 'lne iiiace is full of temples; cverv street has an altar. Some 3'io,(X)o of the inhabitants live on boats.
