THE GENERAL ELECTION
Air Field mot tho women of Johnsonvillo at the residence of Airs Aloore, sear., yesterday afternoon, and after a short address formed a committee of all present to work in his interests. Mrs Fairbairn was elected chairwoman. Air F. T. Aloore, secretary of the men’s committee, was appointed to similarly act for tho ladies. Before leaving, Mr Field was heartily thanked for his address, and asked to assure Mrs Field that her inability to attend meetings of women’s committees would ho compensated for by the increased activity of his supporters.
Notwithstanding the wet weather, a fairly largo audience attended Dr Chapplo’s meeting at Alitchelltown last night. He mentioned with approval the Workmen's Homes Bill, but contrasted the meagroness of this concession to the worker compared with relief from taxes on tea and sugar alone. A few families only would enjoy a cheap home, and become either tho envy or tho contempt of their fellows. If economic and legislative justice were done to labour, the worker could soon build his own homo, and .conserve tho self-respect of himsolf and family hy other means than by receiving favours from tho State, which niuety-uino out of every hundred could not enjoy. Ho unfolded the far-reaching advantages of taxation reform, and claimed to voice the pressing needs of the working classes, and those on whom tho burdens of life pressed most heavily. A vote of thanks was carried unanimously on the motion of Air French, and seconded by Mr AVilson. Aleetings of Air Hislop’s committees and supporters will bo held ss follows: —To-day at Airs Balcombe’s, Brooklyn (ladies), 3 p.m.; at the State school, Island Bay (ladies and gentlemen), 8 p.m.; on Friday at Rod’s tea rooms, Seatoun, near wharf (ladies and gentlemen), 8 p.m. A number of lady friends and supporters of Mr Hislop met yesterday afternoon at the central committee rooms, lliddifdrd street. Airs Hislop was present. A strong committee was formed to work to secure Air Hislop’s return. A meeting of Air O. Izard’s election committee was held in the Sydney street school gymnasium last evening. , Air Izard decided he would address the electors at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday, November Ist. Air Byron Brown will address electors at Kereru to-night.
