A further ■amendment was proposed. ‘'That the Synod recognises that so far as it has been tried in New' Zealand no-H----cense has been on the whole beneficial, and on that account regards the movement with sympathetic interest, and considers that it may be made serviceable in promoting the cause of. temnerance in small towns and country districts where alone it has as yet been tried in this country." This amendment was also rejected. During th© day's sitting a motion -was adopted asking the standing committee to consider the question of salaries paid to teachers in church day-schools in the diocese, and another ” discouraging the practice of Sunday funerals except in cases of absolute necessity.
