SPORTING

W.R.C. SPRING AIEETING. SECOND DAY, PEARCE HANDICAP AVON IJV VENEER. There was a good attendance at the Hutt Park racec-our.se on Saturday afternoon to witness the concluding (lay of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring mootin''. 'J’ho weather was; an improvement on the previous 'lay, but a i.trong northerly blew over tho ccurro during the afternoon. Considering the good received, the holds were disappointingly small. Only in four of the eight events on the programme 'cere two dividends paid. In Iho Hack Hurdles, South Star achieved an easier win than on the first day. It is doubtful if Mr Duncan Rutherford’s colouis have been carried by a poorer class of representatives than Taxpayer and Graduated 'lax. Colli aro by his old favourite Alina. Matakokiri (Hewitt's mount) carried most money in the Tarama Hack Handicap, but was no match ior tiio Revinirained Flotilla, which won a double at tho Otaki meeting. Roth horses were brought out again in the Rnahine Hack Handicap, in which Elotilla put Up a penalty. Tho Seer got all the best of a straggling start, and looked Hike repeating his victory of the first day. He failed to respond to a late niri by the Hutt-traincd Galahad, whose only appearance it was at the .meeting. Martello was out in the Spring Trial Stakos, but shaped, no better than on 4ho previous day, finishing fifth. The Rieenr ton-trained Pas Seul (probably because Hewitt was in the. saddle) was tent out a level-money favourite, and getting well away, never loft the issue in doubt.

Tho scratching of St. Joe and Regn)ation left seven in the Poarco Handicap. As on the previous day, Achilles :ran a splendid race, hut failed to concede Veneer two stone and a half. Tho latter had failed to show any form in tho Wainui Handicap ou the first day, and conseriuently paid the best dividend of the day. Mahutonga shaped lietter than in tho Wellington Handicap, and at tho turn appeared to have Achilles settled, but the latter answered gamely when. Jenkins called on him for greater effort, and secured second money. Signalman failed to run up to Ins first day’s form. Flamen shaped badly, and was tho last to pass ■the post. Tho withdrawal of Ivanoff from the Juvenile Handicap practically reduced that event to a match between tho Hawke’s Bay colts Golden Gate and Tho Squatter. Tho first named was quickest to begin, and was never headed.

Ghoorka scored his second win at tho mooting in the Hutt Park Handicap, in which tho Loohiol horso put up rather a smart performance by defeating tho light-weighted Hinurewa. The concluding event, the N:u Nai Handicap, led to spirited speculation. Ballarat was beet backed, but failed to show her old dash in tho soft going, and finished sixth; St. Claimor got off ■smartly, and had charge throughout. Boris and Exmoor, both trained at Porirua, made the best show of tho others.

The sum of £8328 was invested on the totalisator during the day, making £18,320 for tho meeting.. The double on the Pearce and Hutt Park Handicap was supported to the extent of £786. The Veneer-Ghoorka combination was backed for £l4, and paid £SO 10s. The faceting was well managed by Mr A. E. Whyte (secretary) and his assistant flit J. Griffiths).

There are not many events on the Australian turf that the progeny of Lochiel have not been successful in. The Caulfield Cup winner Marvel Loch is by the Prince Charlie horse from Marvelette, by Marvellous. Marvel Loch is trained by T. F. Scully, at Randwick. Two years ago she won the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. - Last season, out of six starts, she scored twice—in the March Stakes, at Rosehill, and the City Handicap, one mile and a half, at the A.J.C. autumn meeting. This season she has run most consistently. At Randwick, in September, she was unplaced in the Metropolitan Handicap, with 8.12, Warroo, 8.1, being second. She ran second in tho Craven Plate to Gladsome, and second in the Randwick Plate to Nightfall, beating Emir in both events. At Caulfield, she ran second in the Caulfield Stakes to Torah, beating Gladsome, Emir, ’and others, and got the Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield last Wednesday through Emir failing to draw tho weight. Marvel Loch has incurred 101 b penalty in the Melbourne Cup, which brings her weight up to 9.4. Dewey (by Lochiel) won the Caulfield Cup in 1899, , Warroo was rather unlucky to act as runner-up in two such important handicap events as the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap and the Caulfield Cup in the same season. He is in the Melbourne

Cup with 5.2. and moots Alaniapoto on 91b better terms in that race than in tho Alctropolitan. RACING IN ENGLAND. LONDON. October 20.
