Tho “Manchester Guardian.” referring to Mr Deakin’s statement in regard to tho Immigration Restriction Act, says that since Japan, under tho now treaty, may fight for the defence of Australia, she lias additional grounds for discontent at Australia’s attitude towards her.
“From tho British point of view,” tho “Guardian” adds, “the disabilities of our Indian subjects touch our sclfrespect more closely than ; those of an allied but alien nation.”
In the Federal House of Representatives on Friday Mr Dealdn stated that negotiations were proceeding with the Japanese Consul-General in reference to tho Immigration Restriction Act. Tlie Gwcrnmcnt was considering if it was possible to restate the general principies of. Australia's restriction policy without altering its substance—so as to meet the susceptibilities of the Jaoanese.
