PARLIAMENT.
THE ESTIMATES. After the “Times” wont to press on Saturday morning discussion on the Estimates was continued in the House of Representatives. Mr Taylor moved to reduce the item for industrial schools by £l, as an indication that the House was of opinion that the cottage-home system should be inaugurated in connection with tho children attending tiTese schools. There was, he considered, too much of tho prison taint about the present system of conducting industrial schools. —Lost by 26 votes to 23. On the vote for the School for Deaf Mutes (Christchurch), Air Taylor complained of the Government’s extravagance in tho conduct of that institution, there bemg eleven servants to forty children, tho latter having to sleep elsewhere owing to the building not being furnished. Ho moved to reduce tho vote by £l. as a protest against extravagance. —Lost by 33 votes to 12. The whole of the Education vote was passed unaltered. Tho House rose at 3.40 a.m.
