It is stated that the Union Company’s new West Coast trader Arahnrn. now due at Hobart from Horae, will proceed to Port Chalmers to be docked for cleaning and painting. The Arnhura will then immediately replace the Mapourika, which is to undergo an extensive overhaul. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received cable advice that the steamer Kaikoura, which sailed from Wellington on July 14ta for London, arrived at her destination on Thursday last. Owing to wet weather, at Timaru the Poherua did not arrive from that port till 8.15 o’clock lost night. The departure of the vessel for Westport and Greymouth has been postponed till to-morrow at 3 p.m. The Tyser steamer Star of Scotland, now loading meat at the Glasgow Whan, ia to sail for Sydney on Wednesday to load in Australia.

The cargo steamer Louise Roth which arrived at Lyttelton on Friday with coal from Newcastle for Lyttelton and'other southern ports, will load at Timaru and possibly at the Bluif, for South Africa. Captain Christian of the collier Petone will go on holiday leave next month, and his place will be filled by Captain Dinner, late of the Dingadee. Mr Flynn, who has been on sick leave, has rejoined the Kotuku as second officer in place of Mr Cameron, who will await orders.

The schooner Jessie Niccol is completing her outfit at the export pier. Port Chalmers, and (says the “Otago Daily Times’’) will leave in a few days for Macquarie lanlud with a party of sea elephant hunters. The Jessie Niccol has had a varied career. Some 30 years ago she was the Hon G. McLean’s yacht, and was sold by him to Messrs Cormack, Elder, and Co., of Port Chalmers, who fitted her out as a sealer and sent her to the South Seas under the late Captain John Wilson, who sailed her with varied success for a few seasons, and then relinquished his charge, which was taken up by the late Captain Thomas Hodge, who also sailed her with varied success. After the dissolution of tne Otago Whaling and Sealing Company the Jessie Niccol again changed hands, and has been employed more or less successfully as a general trader, returning now to her old occupation of sealing, in which it is hoped she will be successful.
