KENT TERRACE RESERVE.

(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir.—East year Hie Reserves Committee depleted tlic southern portion of the Kent terrace reserve of trees. . and destroyed the asphalt footpath. They wanted to subdivide it, exclude the public, fence it in, and make a carpet garden. When they wore brought face to face with the fact they wero doing an illegal action, they left it for their successors, who, when they came into office, straightway tackled the job and reported ou two occasions. They were getting out a scheme for planting, asphalting, and seating the reserve again. When the committee presented their report, after four mouths’ labour, it was thrown out on the amendment of Councillor Winder, who wanted green grass( as against black asphalt, which the committee had recommended) jvith trees and seats at intervals along the length of the reserve. In April last, when the new Council was elected, I wrote asking them to have the southern portion ploughed, sown with grass, and’plantcd with trees and shrubs, with a footpath along the reserve. Had' .his work been done then, tho place would u:.ve ~i- ata'.ed a decent appearance instead of tho disreputable state it is now in. Tho time has passed for planting this season, and it clearly shows that tho element of opposition is still strong in the Council, when a email job of this kind cannot bo done iwithout so much feeling ;boing brought into 'the matter. The public has to suffer, and the stranger views and goes away with the idea of tho careless neglect shown to matters of this description by thoso in authority. —1 am, etc., G. H. BAYTLIS.
