GIRLS AND OVERTIME.
; (To the Editor " N.Z. Times.") Sir,—l have heen noticing the way in which girls have to go back to work at n : ght. I think when a girl has done nine hours she has done enough for one day. A "boss" is not contented with a fair day’s work, but wants them to come back at night for about sixpence an hour. Now, I think the Labour Department ought not to grant permits, under any consideration, unless the employer is willing to pay his girls tho sum of one shilling per hour for all overtime. Fancy a girl working thirteen hofirs a day for four days out of six, for tho sum of sixpence an hour overtime. Why does not the employer employ more hands if he has too much work for his present staff, or else leave the work go to someone who is in want of it? A girl is given about one-third the wages of a man, and some not that. Now I think the public ought to take the matter in hand and see that when a girl gees back to work at night she should be paid the same wages as a man.—l am, etc., ONE WHO WILL SEE INTO THE MATTER IF THINGS DON’T ALTER. August 23rd.
