Hill-Fisher, 0. IT. Hi.'lmc. J. J. Oswald, E. AV. Hunt, W. Brown,' A. J. 0. Brown, James Brown, tV H. Gundry, AA". li. Holmes, AY. McCulloch, J. Scott, G. B. Hull, D. A. S. Cooper, I). T. Stuart, Morris Fox, G. F. Hollings. The annual report of tho Council stated that the examination under the joint and uniform .Australasian scheme was held a.s usual during the past year. For the degrees of fellow and associate there were in all IS6 candidates from the various institutes, of which two only were successful in passing the full examination. Tito institute sent up fifty-four candidates, of whom two completed their partial pass as associates, eleven secured partial passes, and the rest failed. ' The names of tho candidates who completed tluer partial passes wore:—Air S. G. Chambers (Auckland) anti Mr AV. S. AVheelor (AA’cllington) as associates. Tho report gees on to say: —•'The unprecedented poorness of tho result of tho examination gave rise to muck dissatisfaction throughout the several institutes and on the nart of the candidates. After discussion it was resolved by tho Australian Institutes to have a post examination in April, 1005, a decision which was arrived at rather late to enable New Zealand to join in, but in any case your council decided that it would ho inadvisable to do so. Tho result of tho second examination was on a par with that in October, so that our decision was justified. _ These examinations have dealt a shrious, if not a death, blow to the joint scheme. ATcrtoria and Queensland have announccd their withdrawal; your own council has decided not to join in an examination next October, hut to leave decision as to our future policy until after the annual meeting. Your council appointed tho Dunedin local committee a special committee to go through tho papers of tho New Zealand candidates at tho October, 190-1, examination a'nd report. That com- ‘ mittec, after careful and exhaustive inquiry, lias reported, and copies of tho report have been distributed amongst 1 members and sent to the councils of tho ■ other institutes. “During tho year your council promoted a conference of members of the Accountant ■ Students’ Societies ; throughout tho colony with a view to their organising on uniform lines. The meeting was hold in AA ellington in ) January, and a deputation from tho ' conference wailed upon tho council and placed before if their Views on J various points discussed by them. Your } council is desirous of working in complete harmony with the Students’ Societies, and welcomes from them tho ; fullest expression of views and opinions on accountancy matters. “ A most important matter has en--1 gaged tho attention of your council dur- ’ ing the past year, viz., tho promotion of a bill before Parliament to make J provision for the registration of ac- , countants. In this matter your council has worked hand-in-hand with the New , Zealand Accountants’ and Auditors’ Association. The bill is now before the ■ House, and is in charge of Air J. A. • Millar, AI.H.R., of Dunedin. The annual statement of accounts, duly | audited, is presented herewith. It shows that the institute has the sum of £450 on fixed deposit and £57 5s 5d cash at bank, £9 19s Gd in band, and no liabilities outside those in connection 1 with the Accountants Bill.” ■ In moving tho adoption of the ro- " port and balance-sheet, tho president ; delivered a lengthy and interesting ad- . dress, a summary of which appears olse- , where in this issue. . Air D. T. Stuart, in speaking to tho r motion, said that the examination niat- ‘ ter had given rise to a great deal of . talk, and he was glad to see the council had dealt with it in a firm and satisfaci tory manner. Air Gundry gave the opinion that tho institute would do well to have its own examinations conducted in the colony. There were several chartered accountants of England resident in tho colony t to whom reference could be made when necessary. After further discussion, the report 1 was adopted. The following members of the council retired, and were re-elected:—Group A , —Mr O. P. Powles. Group B—Air AY. AA'. Brown. Group G—Air AY. H. Guu- . dry Group D—Air AYilliam Brown. Group E—Air E. N. Liffiton. The sec- , end member elected for Group E was Air ; AA r . A. Ryan, who succeeds Air AY. T. Irvine. Mr E. AY. Hunt was elected auditor ■ for tho ensuing year. Tho chairman announced that owing to Air O. P. Powles’s ill-health, that gentleman would be unable to conduct ; the students’ examinations, a decision they all regretted. It was moved that tho usual grant i of £7 7s he made for the purchase of books for tho different libraries. Air Hunt moved as an amendment that it ■ be a recommendation to the council to - consider the advisability of increasing the library vote. After a discussion on ■ library matters generally it was decided that the whole question of the conduct of the libraries be gone into by tho council. Air AY. R. Holmes moved that it he ■ a recommendation to the council that the next annual meeting he held in Auckland. —Carried unanimously. . Air D. T. Stuart moved a hearty vote , of thanks to the president for the' great ■ amount of work he had done for the ■ institute. —Carried with acclamation.
