At lost night's meeting of tho Union Parliament, Mr C. J. Nicklin moved a resolution in favour of the introduction of indeterminate sentences for crime. Tie pointed out that the present system did not aim at reforming tho criminal, as would the system of indeterminate sentences. Mr J. if. A. Ilott favoured the introduction of the Elmira reformatory system. Mr H. N. Holmes considered there should be retribution for crime, hut there should also be an effort to reform the criminal. He support-d the motion. The Premier (Mr H. P. Richmond), in supporting tho motion, dealt wtlh tho possibility of eliminating 'he criminal class from society by artificial moans. After further debate the resolution was carried by a large majority. A debate on the Anglo-Japanese alliance is to be held on Friday night between teams representing the Victoria College Society and tho Y.M.CA, The Mayor (the Hon T, W. Ilislop) will act as judge.
