Air W. G. Haybittle, of Foilding, returned from a trip to 'England by the Afchcnio yesterday. Air Orlando Konipthomo has returned to Wellington, after a fifteen months’ tour through tho Orient. Air Owen C. Pleasants, of Halcombo, is announced as a candidate for tho Orona seat in tho Liberal interest.

Dr Edith Cochrane-Brown, of Christchurch, was among tho passengers who arrived from England yesterday hy tho A t lien I c.

Constable D. Alahonoy was yesterday presented by his fellow-officers at the Lambton quay station with a wedding souvenir.

Air J. P. Luko and Air A. H. Fullford have intimated their preparedness to bo nominated for election to the vacant seat on the City Council. Tho Rev. F. W. Rowlands and Airs Rowlands, of Nelson, will leave Wellington. on the 2nd prox., on route to Sydney, to join tho Orotava to England.

Among journalistic visitors to Wellington at present aro Air Mark Oohcn, editor of tho Dunedin “Star,” and Mr Grant, proprietor of the “Woodvillo Examiner.” Tho death has occurred at Clarksville (m southern Otago) of Mr Henry Clark, aged oighty-Hve years. Sir William Russell and Lady Russell returned to tho colony by the Atiienio yesterday. Their two daughters, wiio went Horae with them, will remain in England tor three or four months longer, and expect to reach Mnv Zealand by Christmas.

Mr AV. Houghton, who arrived from England by the Athenic yesterday, is from the London branch of tho National Bank of Now Zealand, and comes to tho colony as one of the bank's inspectors. Ho was accompanied by Mrs Houghton and their three daughters.

Air C. E. S. Gillies, the well-known golf player, died at Judge’s Bay, Auckland, last week, at the ago of thirtyeight. A few days ago, while playing golf, ho caught a chill, which developed into pneumonia. He was a son of tho late Air Robert Gillies, of Dunedin, and uophow of tho late Air Justice Gillies. Ho graduated in New Zealand and at Cambridge, and was a member of the Auckland legal firm of Gillies and Colheck. Air Gillies took a great interest in acclimatisation matters.

Miss Gertie Campion, at one time a member of Pollard’s Opera Company in Now' Zealand, who contracted consumption in South Africa, and for a couple of years had been incapacitated in Johannesburg, was a passenger from Capetown to Hobart by tlio Atihenic, transhipping at the latter port for Melbourne. -Miss Campion was bad indeed. She spent on an average about sixteen hours a day on dock in all kinds of weather, and had her meals served on deck every day. She appeared slightly better towards the end of the voyage, and was able to walk about a little. Miss Campion was accompanied by her mother and sister (.Miss K. Campion).
