London), ami Councillors Hastings, MeEuan, Nicholson, MaofariaiiOj Wakeiiain. ami Fintllay, The engineer reported that repairs had been effected to the cottage occupied by the ca-retakcr oi the Hecre-alion Ground. A good deal of metalling had been done on various streets during the month. That portion of the Korukoro road between L)r Hamilton’s house and the embankment had been repaired. Mr Cook (.the engineer) com pa lined that in many inslaucos trees on private ; proi>ei’ty adjoining roads had been allowed to grow to a considerable height. In his opinion, trees should not be allowed to grow higher than fifteen to twenty feet. The report also asked that Councillors should inspect the sanitary service, and arrange for necessary improvements.—ln the discusion which followed, it was stated that in many oases the shadow of trees on road-lines had a very bad effect on roads during the winter months. The clerk was instructed to make inquiries, and report to the Council on the subject. The remainder oi the report was adopted. The borough Inspector reported ten persons who had off ended against the by-laws by riding on the footpaths. The inspector announced that he intended to make his spring house-to-houso inspection shortly. There was a somewhat patfiotio paragraph in the report to the effect that no stray dogs had been captured yet, owing to the kennels not being ready.—Some of the Councillors put in a pica for the cyclists who had been detected pedalling on the footpaths. Councillor Wakohain thought the inspector was “too smart,” and Councillor Hastings suggested that hues should go towards extending the cycle-tracks in the borough. As some people who should fravo been prosecuted had escaped that ordeal, he moved that the offenders in this instance should be allowed to go free, and that in future cases the inspector should exercise his discretion. Councillor McEwan seconded the motion. Councillor Findlay said the Council should bo prosecuted for not providing cycle-tracks; cyclists . could not bo blamed for riding on the footpaths, taking into account the present state of the roads. It was agreed to withdraw the motion, subsituting an instruction to the inspector that no fines should bo asked for in the case of first offenders, and that the persons named in the report should be proceeded against. The other clauses in the report were adopted. The gas manager reported that the coal carbonised during fcho month amounted to 94 tons Scwt.. producing 1.234,800 cubic foot of gas, or an average of 13,000 ft per ton, showing an increase over same, month of last year of ISs,Booft: total for four months of current year 4.G79,GGOft. The progress of the gasworks during the month had been satisfactory. An order for vortical cast-iron pipes has been placed with Messrs A. and T. Burt and Co., to be landed by December Gtli. During the month arrangements were made with the manager of the Westport Coal Company for a supply of unscreened coal at a greatly reduced price. If the returns looked for prove correct, a saving of over £2OO per annum would be effected. During the month twenty-five new services had been put in, consisting of 1392 ft of Tin pipes, 392 ft of Jin pipes, besides the ordinary attendances upon current services.—Tho report was received.
