BOXING.

COMING TO LOGGERHEADS. There are indications of tho Wellington Boxing Association and the New Zealand Boxing Council coming to loggerheads over the former body’s proposal to place a professional .boxing exhibition on tho programme at tho New Zealand Amateur championship meeting on July 6th and 7th. , . .. , At its last meeting the association decided to make arrangements -with W. Murphy, ex-champion feather-weight of the world, to give an exhibition spar with a well-known local* exponent of boxing. The council had previously, hinted its objection to the proposal, and at a meeting on Monday evening resolved to adhere to its*objection. . • The secretary of the association (Mr W. Coffey), has received a lengthy communication from the governing body in which it is stated that sanction will not bo given to placing a professional item on the programme. The council claims that it has absolute jurisdiction in this matter, and .should the association refuse to fall into line with its wishes', the championships will have to be decided elsewhere than Wellington. There is said to he little probability of the.local body receding from its position and a deadlock is imminent. The'couuoil has intimated that it is not disposed to argue further in the matter, and the association entertains the same opinion. Unless the council gives way, the association which has undertaken the management of the championship meeting, will wash its hands of the whole affair and invito the council to manage the championship itself. * The secretary has convened an urgent meeting of the managing committee for this evening to consider the council’s ultimatum. and decide what course shall he followed. The secretary of the association has just been notified by Murphy that he is willing to appear at the championship meeting under tho conditions submitted to him by the association. Mr T. H. Hobson, secretary of the Canterbury Boxing Association, will pass through Wellington on Friday on hie way from the-South Sea Islands to Christchurch. Mr Hobson, who has been seeking a - change of air and scenes tor tho benefit of his health, is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the "noble art” in the Cathedral City.
