CITY POLICE COURT.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 31. (B'Moro Alessrs H. SaTiSon and John Stratford, J.P.’s.) Charles Euticott was sentenced to one month’s hard labour for drunkenness. Within the last sis months ho had been convicted three times for a similar offence. Donald Alathiesou, who had one previous conviction, was fined 10s, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, for a similar offence. Two first offending inebriates were fined 5s each, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Peter Carni© and John ■' Armstrong were charged with the theft of an overcoat, about £2 in money, and a pair of gloves, of tho total value of £5 13s 6d, the property of Thomas C. Warren. Detective McGrath said tho men were only arrested on Tuesday evening, and requested. a remand till Friday. This was granted. E. J. Tressider, for whom Air Wilford appeared, was further remanded till to-day on a charge of leaving his child in Hobart (Tasmania) without providing for its maintenance. Bail was renewed —one surety of £SO, or two of £25. . BREACHES OF CfTY BY-LAWS. John Mills was charged Tvith driving a horse attached to a loaded vehicle up Charlotte street while sitting on top of the said load. Air Wilford applied for a remand, in order that the case might bo heard before a Magistrate. Tho remand was granted. Owen Higgins was charged with impeding traffic in Kent terrace by failing to keep the vehicle he was driving off tho tram lines for a distance of forty yards in front of a tram car. Inspector Doylo intimated that defendant had admitted the offence, explaining that he must have been dozing, as he had been up all the previous night attending to his sick children. A fine of Is, with, costs (7s), was inflicted, tho presiding Justice remarking that'ho must be more careful in future. For driving an express carrying goods for hire, and not being licensed so to do, j , . was convicted, and ordered to pay costs (7s). WANDERING CATTLE. Inspector Doyle, on behalf of the Wellington City Council, took proceedings against numerous persons for breaches of tho city by-laws in that they allowed cattle' to stray in public thoroughfares. G. H. Baylis, who was charged with allowing six cows to wander at large at Island Bay, pleaded as an excuse that a person who had bought a section of land in a paddock over which ho had a right to graze his cattle had pulled down the fence in order to re-erect it further hack, and the cattle had thereby got out. There were four previous convictions against accused. The presiding Justice remarked, in inflicting a fine of 5s and costs (7s), that Mr Baylis might be able to obtain redress from the person he was paying rent fb for the paddock. For similar offences, R. Welshy (four previous convictions) was fined 10s and costs (7s); Sarah Fryer, William Rice, and E. Bloomfield (each three previous convictions), and 0. J. Johnson and O. Avis (each two previous convictions) were fined 10s, with costs (8s): Timothy Hayes (one previous conviction) was fined 10s, with costs (7s). Six firstoffenders wore fined small amounts, and ordered to pay costs. _ 1 Five Northland and Karon offenders were fined sums ranging from 5s to 10s, with costs. UNREGISTERED DOGS. For failing to register dogs, Air Doyle,, tho Oify Council inspector, took proceedings against forty-fivo_ persons. Ho asked the Bench to inflict penalties of costs only in cases where tho dogs had been registered since the informations wore laid. Twenty-six persons were ordered to pay cysts, four were fined small amounts (with costs), and in two oases the offenders wore convicted and discharged. Nino informations were withdrawn, one dismissed, and three adjourned. TRUANCY. Johp Dineen, Truant Inspector to the Wellington Education Board, proceeded against twenty-six persons for breaches of tho Education Act in that they had failed to send their children to school. In eighteen cases fines of 2s, with costs (7s). were imposed, one offender was fined 2s (without costs), and one 5s with costs (7s). Four cases were adjourned, and two withdrawn.
