FIFTY YEARS AGO.

(From the "Wellington Independent,” April 7th, 1855.) “Mr G. Fyffe is prepared to enter into arrangements for the depasturing of sheep and cattle on his run at Kai Kora.” “The Board of Immigration having opened a registration office at the Depot, Thomdon quay, parties requiring mechanics, labourers, shepherds, domestic servants, etc., can register their applications thereat free of cost.” «The Gazelle arrived at Otago on the 29th ult., from Sydney, with a cargo of slock, consisting of 750 sheep, 42 heifers and 59 horses, which were landed in fin© condition.” “ On Wednesday last the inhabitants of Wellington had another opportunity of witnessing the capture of a whale in the harbour. At about 11 o’clock a whale was seen spouting in the bay, in the direction of Kai Warra. Riley and a miscellaneous crew . immediately maimed Messrs Bethun© and Hunter’s boat, and started off in chase.' They came up to the whale off Pipitea Point, and fastened to her without much trouble. The whale then sot off at great speed, dragging the boat after her —and at intervals the boat was hauled upon her for, the purpose of giving the headsman an opportunity of lancing her. This did not last long, however, for the whale was soon killed, the whole time occupied being less than an hour. Mr Whitelock, the master of the cutter Auckland, fastened to, the whale, and Riley killed her. The whale was afterwards towed to the head of the bay, and fastened to the brig Glenco. where she now is, and we understand that it is intended to try her out on board that vessel. It is a young cow right whale, and it is estimated that she will turn out about four tuns of oil.”
