Beniamin's grandfather, Tnomasi Franklin, was born at Ecton in 1598. He was a blacksmith and had four sons, of whom Josias, Benjamin’s father, was the youngest. The rector of the parish in their days perceived the intelligence of these four young men, and encouraged them in their education. The eldest. mained in Ecton and died there in 1702. He became an influential person in the county. The second son, John, was a wool-dyer at Banbury, and to him „ wan apprenticed. The third son, Benjamin, was a silk-dyer in .London. He wrote many poems addressed to his friends, and he invented a system of shorthand which he taught to Benjamin, j his nephew, when on a visit to America.
