BURGLARY IN AUCKLAND.
ASSAULT AND ATTEMPTED ROBBERY. PRVSS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, June 23. The house of Mr R. Laird, Mount Eden, was entered by burglars, and a quantity of jewellery stolen: ‘Mrs Laird took her children out for a walk. On her return she heard a man running along tho side passage-way, and subsequently found drawers rifled and emptied, cupboards searched and boxes opened, while a couple of writing-cases were smashed to pieces in the search for valuables. Investigation showed that articles of jewellery to tho value of £3O had been stolen. A case 'of assault arid attempted robbery took place in Upper Nelson street last night. A middle-aged man named Beagle was about to cross a gully when he was assailed by a young man, who struck him. on tho face, and then attempted to overpower him. Beagle, ‘however succeeded in giving tho alarm, and the assailant decamped.
