HAWKE’S BAY WINTER MEETING. SECOND DAY.. (From. Advance.”) NAPIER. June 23. Tho Jockey Club was favoured with glorious weather for its winter iiKOUJig. Tho attendance was good. Stockman (who did not make ii»o journey from Auckland) was the only witndrawal of eight acceptors for the Hawke s Bay Steeplechase". These two were allowed to gel: a groat break on the field. Papain, who was a good favourite?, made a big effort: to catch tho leaders iu tho last: round. lie made up his ground splendidly, and caught Victory at tho last fence, but the latter had the most left in him, and woo by a hare half-length. Eclair was half-a-dozen lengths away third, just clear of Towhatu. Mourner ran off at tho sod wall Iho second lime round, and Evening camo to grief at that obstacle tho lawt time round. Rnpanui was beaten off after going two miles and finished si'mo distance behind the ..placed horses. Victory was bred by the lion J. D. Ormond, and picked up by his x iVGSOII t owner at that gentleman's sale at Pal-mer-ion North a year ago for lOgs, He has turned out a cheap purchase for tho Ashburton sportsman. Ho won iho Enfield Steeplechase at Kiccarton tho firsttime he carried the red, white and blue jacket. ilo also scored at Timaru. Kohunui was vory lucky to get tho Pinal Steeplechase at Wanganui, in which event Victory slipped and camo to grief. Sam Brown is somewhat fortunate at Hastings. He won tho Trial Steeplechase and Hurdles last winter with Hurricane. In the Hack and limiters’ Steeplechase Vagrant toppled over at the sod wall. Rhyl and Sabrcur ran together most of the way. The former gained ground at tho jumps, which Sabrcur made up on j tho flat. They lauded over tho last fence 1 together, Sa.breur winning by a couple of ! lengths. Gun Metal was beaten off. The pace in tho Hurdles was not so solid as j on the previous day. Defoe, Aroha and Midia ran together for a mile and a! quarter, but the latter dropped back beaten at the bend, and came to grief j throe hurdles from homo. She, however, j continued in the race, and passed tho post first. AV. Price escaped unhurt. Crcusot had A.roha’a measure two furlongs from home, and won easily. Moura was made a big pot for tho Juno Handicap, but, although ho got' a good position at the start, no*failed to stay sis furlongs. Xco, who ran prominently tho previous day, beat the Martinboroughtrained Rungarawa by half a length. Rungarawa was brought out again in the Final Handicap, and ran a good second to the Gisborne-owned Paria, who was prominent throughout. This was Paria’s only apearance at th© meeting. Slcepwoll (P. Neagle’s mount) was most fancied for tho Ladies’ Necklace. Bandmaster ran a good race. The starting was good and tho racing excellent, several of tho .finishes being close, while the- jumping was first-class. Victory headed Towhatu at the back of the course the pair gaining a long lead from the rest of tho field. Mourner ran off'at tile sod wall, and Towhatu again took tho lead from Victory at tho post and rail. AHolory soon got in front again. with Papatu, Evening and Eclair near at hand. The sod wall was reached in that order. Hero Evening fell. Papatu drew np to tho leader at the dquble post and rail, but Victory forged aheadtonce more, and after a great race to the post won from Papatu by half a length. Going along the bock stretch the two took the hurdle together, Crcusot coining at the jump, and Midia lying handy in third place. At the railway bend hurdle Midia lost her rider. Creusot drew away,and won by ab>ut two lengths, Aroha being .unable to get up, Defoe a fair third, lime, 3min -14-sec. Dividends, X2 6s and A*l 4s.

Sabreur and Rhyl were cn even terms and entered the straight almost side by side. A capital race ensued, in which Rhyl raced off. and Sabreur won by about six lengths, Gun Metal 150yds away.
