The guests numbered 150, and included Mr w. P. Reeves, Agcut-Gonoral for New Zealand, and other Agents-Gbnoral. Sir Horace Tozer, Agent-General for Queensland, presided, fn tho course ol a speech, in which lie referred to tire labour position in Queensland, ho said Italy’s representatives had offered to supply an unlimited number of immigrants suitable for work on sugar plantations, provided contracts were permitted for one year. When tho scheme was established tho contracts, _no said, would probably bo found vmecessary, but in tho face of tho Commonwealth's policy it was impossible to proceed with such a scheme.
