BY-ELECTION IN ENGLAND.
A LIBERAL SUCCESS. _ LONDON, March 17. Th© by-elacition for the East Domseffc seat resulted in the return of Mr Lyell, a Liberal and Freetrader, by 5929 votes against 5109 polled by Mr . Van Kiaalte, the. Conservative candidate. This by-election replaces a Conservative by a Liberal. The vacancy was caused through the late member .ibr East Dorset, Mr H. N. Sturt, being elevated to the peerage by the, death of hia father. Lord Alington. At the general election of 1900, Mr Sturt defeated his Liberal opponent by 96 votes, the figures being— Sturt 4776, Allen 4680. At this by-elec-tion the total number of votes polled was 11,038, and the net Liberal gain is shown to be 1249 votes.
