BURGLARS IN AUCKLAND
A DESPERATE STRUGGLE, PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. March 7. About midnight on Saturday, Omslable Skinner, hearing a suspicious uoise in the doorway of the shop of JJr Clarke, chemist, in Victoria street, accosted a man there, who asserted that he was the owner of tho premises. Tho constable discovered tliat the door had been forced. lie closed with the man, and after a desperate struggle handcuffed him. When taken to the lock-up, the prisoner gave the name of George Ashton. An unsuccessful attempt was made to break into the post office in the Strand Arcade, Queen street, on Friday night. A daring robbery was committed in a honsie in_Albcpt street, tenanted by bandmaster Hunter who was absent, his wife and two daughters being at home. Dni<ing the night Mrs Hunter saw ,a man walk straight to a basket containing Ao or AG and some jewellery, valued at AMO. stV,e it, and rush away. She jumped out of bod, but the burglar had left tho doors open, and effected an easy retreat. The basket, minus the money, but wiAi the jewellery untouched, was found in an adjacent yard.
