Throe well-known French professors have conceived the idea for crossing the Atlantic by balloon. They are Professor Endues, the geographist; Mr Berget, of the Sorbonno; and M. Capassa, the aeronaut. They estimate that they wi!J require a balloon of 13,000 cubic metres capacity to carry in all sis persons, a parachute, and a lifeboat, two of the occupants being sailors, who would take charge of the boat in case of accident. They have made a careful study of the winds which prevail in the Atlantic, and they have come to the conclusion that the best point to start- from would bo the Island of Tone rifle or'Palma, in the Canaries, in the month of May. If their provisions are realised, they would then hope tq -land on the Island of Trinidad, off the Venezuelan coast, some 5000 kilometres distant, Owing to t-ho force of the wind at that time ftf tjw y'fnr, the prqfossqrs believe the journey could bn accomplished in between four and five days.
