HUMANE SOCIETY AWARDS.

FBESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, July 3. Yesterday afternoon the Mayor (Hon ■E. Mitohelson) presented awards made by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. Among those who attended were one or two survivors from the Elinfmite, which was wrecked at tho Three ings last November. The awardswere as foUows: Walter W. Hurley, bronze medal in case,, with special ribbon, also certificate on parchment, for courage and humanity. Hurley has on several occasions jumped into tho sea to save people in danger of drowning. One, for which the medal -was given, was for jumping over to save a woman in Auckland harbour. Captain W- D. Reid, special certificate bn vellum, illuminated and in carved oak frame. This was awarded for courage and humanity shown at the wreck of the Elingamite. . . ' A framed certificate similar to Captain Reid’s, but not illuminated, was awarded to Miss Emily R. Barron, who by prompt action at Bllerslio Statu-n most probably saved the life of a. male passenger. : Tho man attempted to alight when the train' move,! off, witn the result that ho fell and his legs got entangled. Miss Bai-ron, seizing tho man by tho shoulders, almost supported his weight as she ran along with the train until it was pulled up. Letters of commendation were awarded by the society to Constable Cahill a"(I Constable A. Skinner for jumping into tho harbour to save people from drowning.
