A WELCOME CHANGE
(From Our Special Correspondent.) LONDON, April'3.
The first conversion of a Londin rail, way from steam to electric-traction , is showing signs of nearing reality. Those wno remember tha old "underground” and all its drawbacks of smoke and sulphur and filth will be able to see something very different before long, are on tho multiple unit system, a motor and carriages have been built at Loughborough and delivered in London. They are on the multipel unit system, a motor under three out of the seven carriages making up the train. Tho two rival systems that are being tested are the Thcmson-Houston and the 'Westinghouse. All the cars are of one class, they are open! from end to end, and have seats running along the sides, with a good wide floor-space in between- so that during a crush a row of passengers can stand without inconveniencing the sitters. Each car has forty-eight seats, or 336 for the train, and these will be run at intervals of only a minute and a half in the busiest time of the day. Tho end-doors, platform, and folding-gates will be like those already adopted bv tho tube only that central sliding doors are added for quite emptying at terminal stations.
