Mrs Ben Fuller, wife of tho manager of tho Alhambra Theatre in Dunedin, died somewhat suddenly on Wednesday last from pleurisy. Air James MoKcnzic, of Weber (near Dannevirkc), prior to,his departure from that district, was presented by the settlers with a marble clock. Mr E. Whitaker, conductor of tho choir at tho Dannevirko Catholic Church, has been presented by tho members with a silver-mounted baton. The Premier informs us that tho Hon. A. J. Mr Cyril Ward, who met with an accident at Lincoln College, a week or two ago, is making a favourable recovery. Sir Joseph Ward expects to return to Wellington on Juno sth. Tho friends of Air E. W. Penfold, who was accidentally shot whilst marking on tho Poihill Gully riflo range on April 4th, will be pleased to learn that his condition has of late improved considerably. Air Leslie H. Boynolds, C.E., passed through Wellington yesterday on his way to Nelson. Air Eeynolds has been inspecting the works which he has in hand for tho improvement of Patea harbour. He has also been engaged to advise upon extending the sewerage system of Hawera. News was received in Wellington yesterday of the death at Auckland of Aliss Maud Hutcheson, a young lady wellknown by reason of her frequent appearances at concerts and amateur theatrical performances organised in this city on behalf of charity. Aliss Hutcheson’s parents and relations, who -reside in Wellington, will have tho sympathy of a' large circle of friends in their unexpected bereavement. A presentation is to be made next Alonday evening at the Foresters’ Hall, Tory street, to Air Chapman, who for a long time past-has been an official of Court Bobin Hood, besides filling the post of District Senior Beadle to the executive of the order for the province. 'Mr Chapman, who for some time past has been in a business partnership oh Lambton quay,, is about.to start business 'for himself in the Wairarapa. Tho secretaryship of the Drivers’ Union—which has been filled by Air Allan Orr for over three years—is at present vacant, owing to Air Orr having resigned the position. At its meeting last night the union passed a motion expressing regret that Air Orr had found such a stop nedessary, and further expressing a hope that Air Orr would remain connected with the society. Yesterday Air Orr posted his resignation as secretary to the Timberworkers’ Union. News from Nelson states that with regard to the forthcoming retirement of Air Heaps, Collector of Customs and Stipendiary ’Alagistrate for tho country districts, on a pension, a petition has hoen signed by forty-five importers and sent to tho Minister of, Marine, praying for his retention as Collector of Customs. Petitions have also been sent to tho Justice Department from Takaka and Collingwood, praying for the retention of Air Heaps as Alagistratc, even if he retires from the Customs Department.
