PETTY SMUGGLING.
PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. Anvil 28. Henry Vaughan, donkeyman era thesteamer Rakanoa, walked ashore from the Westralia just as it was getting dark yesterday carrying a pared. When challenged by a Customs officer, he replied that the parcel only contained old clothes. Inside the wrapping were found six new shirts and a pair of trousers, with an invoice showing that they had been purchaser! in Sydney for £3 Is. The Collector of Customs prosecuted Vaughan at the Police Court to-day for petty somegling. He stated that accused had been trading to Auckland for twentythree years, and had not been convicted before. The duty on the parcel amounted to 16s Bd, and the goods were valued at £3 17s. Vaughan pleaded guilty. His Worship, taking into consideration the good character of defendant, ordered Inin to pay £4 3s 8d value of the goods, duty paid— the lowest penalty he could inflict,.
