Dalgoly and Co., Limited, Cnristchurch, have received tho following advice by oablo from London, dated 22nd iii.-U : —Tbo wool sales continue firm, and lately reported rales are fully maintained. Owing lo a thick fog no sales wore held yesterday. Since our last telegram prices of sheepskins are unchanged. The Industries and Commerce Dcpartment yesterday received tho following cable message from tho Agent-Gene-ral, dated London, tho 21st inst; —Wool sales are proceeding. Tho present series includes 117,000 bales of Now Zealand wool. Competition is very keen, tho chief feature of the market being the demand for crossbred wool. Fine crossbred lias advanced Id per lb; medium, crossbred, "d per lb; and ooarso crossbred, id per lb. The prices for merino are about tho same as last sale, or slightly better. YESTERDAY'S W OOL SALKS. Thu New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Limited, reports as follows: —At the third sale of the season the Associated W ooi llrokers oiicrcd about 300 U bales, of which our catalogue comprised 1120 bales. There ius a oiaid attendance of buyers, local and Heme, and competition was brisk fur coarse and medium crossbred, but for fine free Koniney wool prices offered tv ere in most cases la to ;[-d less than was bid at last sales for similar wool. Wo quote;—Fine Romney and crossbred, (111 to G:|d; medium crossbred, 3.',d to s;|il; coarse crossbred. 4d to oil; pieces and bellies, 2Jd to 3id; locks, lid to 2id. Tho United Fanners’ and tho Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operativo Associations, Limited, report as follows:—The third sale of the season was hold at the Art Gallery. Combined catalogues offered hy brokers amounted to 3750 bales. Them was a largo attendance of buyers; prices ruled on a par with last sales, ' except for coarse crossbreds, which ruled about ;’d por lb dearer, and lambs’ wool which was in demand, superior lines bringing up to G ; )d por lb. Wo quote as follows Fine crossbred, Cfd to sf'd per II): medium, 4jfd to skl por lb; coarse and logslaincd, 4d to 4Jcl per lb; lambs’ wool, 4!}d to Gjd per lb; pieces, 2d to 3cl; locks, Id to 2d per lb. Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., report:— 3750 hales were offered by the various brokers. A largo attendance of buyers was present, several representatives of Fnropean houses being present for tho first time. As compared with tho salo held on 12th December, thoro is little change in values to report. Tho rise hero in December was in anticipation of the rise in London shown at tho sale just opened, so it was hardly to bo expected that wo should sco a further substantial rise hero to-day. Medium and coarse crossbreds, however, might bo said to bo a farthing dearer to-day. Lambs’ wool was in good demand, average lambs bringing 5d- to s;\d, and superior sold as 'high as 6:ld. Wo quote:—Halfbreds. Gd to 7jd per lb; superior fine crossbreds, 5,',d to 614: medium crossbreds and Romneys, 'll (I to 5:1 tS: coarse crossbreds and Lincolns, »Wd to 5:ld; logstained and inferior, 3}d to 4-id; lambs, superior, s}cl to Old; lambs, medium, 5d to- sfd; lambs, seedy, 4d to 4jd. A largo proportion of the linos wore sold to-day under tho hammer, growers being glad to take tho prices ruling, bint after tho sale it was disclosed that some of tho reserves on passed-in lots put upon tho wools by growers wore Id to lid more than value. It is hard to know why wool is sent in for sale at all if +ho grower is not going to sell at current market rates, an cl it is harder still for brokers to realise why growers should * consider it good business to offer wool hampered with these reserves. Some day, however, growers will recognise the fact that high reserves are in the end hurtful to themselves, and then, - and not till* then, will tho local sales he thoroughly successful. ’ _ Murray," Roberts and Co. report:— At tho third salo of tho season tho combined brokers offered 4000 bales, of 'which wc* catalogued 1050 bales, about 80 por cent, of these being sold in tho room. Prices wore firm, with an upward tendency, as compared with tho December sale, and reflected tho full extent of tho advance in prices which Iras taken place sinco tho close of tho London November sales, and which was to a largo extent anticipated at tho local salo of 19th • December. Tho coarso grades of crossbred showed an advance of quite a farthing per lb "on tho prices then current. Lambs wool was eagerly competed for, ono superior lot in our catalogue, bright crossbred lambs, realising 7d per lb. ffo quote— Malfbrod and merino lots offering), 7d to B;’,d perbroils, bd to 6Jd per ib; medium bright " crossbred and Romney, sjd to 6jd per lb;*Lincoln and ooarso crossbred. 4]d to 5Vd per lb; inferior and log-stained crossbred, 4d to 4:fd per lb; lambs wool, fine to superfine, 5Jd to 7d per Ib; lambs wool, inferior to medium, 4;Jd to s}d per lb; pieces and bellies, 3d to 4d per lb; locks, lid to 2RI per lb. Tho New Zealand Lean and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received tho following cable from its Loudon house, dated 20th inst.: —“Sale opened about par to 5 per cent higher for fine gresy crossbred and merino, and about 71 per cent to 10 per cent higher for medium greasy crossbred, coarse greasy crossbred and crossbred slipo. Tho market is active.” Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received tho following cablegram from their London house, Messrs Sanderson, Murray and Co., dated tho 20th inst,:— Merino, market pax to 5 per cent, advance; crossbred, medium ta fmo, advanced 5 per cent; coarso crossbred, advanced 10 per cent.
