WELLINGTON RACING (.LUX'S SUMMER, -MixXINO. BRILLIANT PERFORAIANCIi BY ADVANCE. Tho summer meeting of tho AVeilinglou Racing Club opened at Hull Pant yesterday in glorious ’.voiillicr. The attendance aiii 11 iy large, ami constitute;, Ji record for Wellington race laeel mgs. Prominent lllliung LUO visltuis WCl'e Sir George t.’liilorcl, chairman of the Racing Conference; Messrs G. G. Stead, J. li. Reid, I'. Campbell, M. Fnodiamlcr and VV. If. I*. 'Uoudrebe, well-known Canterbury sportsmen ; Mr A. W. Car,; inesideut, of tho Ma.Jerton Racing Club; the Jlou J. D. Ormond ami Air Paul Hunter, of Han lie’s Bay; and Mr • Joseph Paul, of Wanganui. With the exception of the classic race, the lie Ids throughout v.vre good, and some ini crest ine racing was witnessed. Air Chadwick’:; handicaps provided good finishes, and in only one event (the Cop; dill the absolute first favourite win. Several horse,.; which were well backed on their form at recent mi clings shaped il is - appoint tngly. 'i he steward ; did not consider it. necessary to inquire into the running of any of the horses, anil Unmeeting passed off without protest of any kind. Toroaai, who had an engagement later in the day, was the only withdrawal, from (he Anniversary Handicap. 'llia best-backed runners —Porinui and Queen's Cmird—ran badly, although the latter finished immediately behind tho placed nurses. Livonia, who was one of tint hest-b,ached of the ten runners, looked all over a winner at six furlongs, but tired at the finish, and was beaten by Wimlwhistle. Tim whole of the ten acceptors sported silk in the Cup. General Symons and .Dundas made tho most of their light • weights for about a mile. Hero ilinetanra was going stronger than anything, just behind Motor. At the. halfmile post, Advance, who was making lit:-; reappearance, ran past Hmctaiira and Motor. The lop-weight sailed away from tho beaten held in great style, and had tho raco won before entering the straight. Iliuetaura, who was ridden from tho to.p of the straight, was the only horse in tho field able to make an effort. Advance received a great ovation as lie passed the post, and horse and rider were heartily cheered when they returned to tho weighing enclosure. The weight carried by tho Vanguard horse (lOst 41b) was a record for the raco. The timo put up (Amin 34 l-ssoc) is a record for tho colony. Tho previous host was 2inin 35 2-osoc, by Renown, ip I ho same raco two years ago. Siego Gnu, who was second favourite, made a poor show, and finished seventh. Tho pace killed most of tho runners.

It was intended to start King Log iu tho Nursery Handicap, but to prevent a walk-over in tho Molliugton Stakes, Mr Stead sent tho colt out to oppose Achilles. Tho latter got a break on at tho start, and proved too good for tho two-year-old. King Log was tho only withdrawal from tho Nursery Handicap. Treadmill made tho running from the start, and was only beaten by a narrow margin, after a punishing finish with Gladsome. Anratus, who appeared to be run off his legs in the first tv. o iiitInngM, came again at tho finish, and beat Idea for third place. Speculation on tho totalisator was particularly brisk during the afternoon, tho sum of £13,937 being put through. This amount represents an incrcn.se of £1394 compared with tho Cup day last year. Tho arrangements in connection with tho meeting wero excellent, with the exception of tho railway traffic, for which tho officials of the club wore in no way responsible. Minifio’s band played selections of music on the lawn during tho afternoon. Mr Harry Piper despatched the fields iu Ids best form.
