LORD HAWKE’S TEAM. THE WANGANUI MATCH. mess association. WANGANUI, January 6. The match with a Wanganui fifteen was won by the Englishmen by eight, wickets. Tho batting of the Englishmen to-day was rather disappointing, as none of the best bats came off. T\ariicr played a careful innings, only, hitting one boundary. Thompson bit in fmo stylo, making five boundaries and one hit out of the ground in his 40. Stunning showed the best form, bis batting being clean and powerful. Tho local fielding was good, but two latches wero missed. Tbo total of 140 was only 20 ahead of Wanganui. Bannister was the most successful bowler, with four for 36, Howdon tailing five for 49. Tho pitch was good, but tho visitors seemed to lift tho ball frequently instead of keeping their strokes on the ground. With so many in tho field nearly every ball lifted to tho boundary stood a chanco of being caught, consequently there was not much freedom of play. Wanganui began their second innings after lunch, H. B. Cave being bowled at 7. Then the brothers Marshall made a good stand, the next wicket falling at 42. G. Marshall was ultimately stumped by Whatman off Bosanquet, who was bowling well, and took six for 18. J. Marshall was also stumped smartly for 19, after an attractive innings. The rest of the wickets fell very quickly, Fannin and Riddiford alone showing a bold front. Hargreaves, who was bowling splendidly on a somewhat worn pitch, took seven for 23. Tho bowling seemed much better than on Saturday, and but for tbo stand mado by tho Marshalls, tbo total would hare been voi'y low. Wanting 58 to win, tho Englishmen went in tail first, and Stanning and Williams were disposed of for 14. Then Leatham and Johnson played an attractive partnership, tho former being good on tho leg, and getting three boundaries off Howdon in ono over. Johnson drove superbly along the ground. Warner succeeded Leatham, and fpnnd tho leg boundary twice off Bannister. Then Johnson mado tho winning hit with a splendid off drive. Tho visitors are to play an exhibition game to-morrow. Tho impression here is that their bowling is much better than their batting, Hargreaves especially being very good. Dowson is not playing here. Scores;— WANGANUI.
