PALMERSTON NORTH.

(By Our Spceia'i Boportcr.) Saturday. Sandow, the strong 'man, was welcomed to Palmerston this afternoon by Mr W. T. Wood, and Mayor cf the town, and several leading citizens. This evening his performance was witnessed by a packed audience. The well-known linn of Messrs Ireland and Company, grocers and general merchants, is about to pass into the hands of Mr J. A. Nash, v. ho Ims successfully controlled the business for a number of years. Prom Monday next the business will be known under the title of J. A. Nash and Company. Mr Nash is to bo heartily congratulated. He is a young Palmerstonian who has advanced with, the town, and takes a keen and intelligent interest in its welfare. A very successful stock salo was held on the projjerty of Mr M. B. Kid or at Otaki yesterday. High prices for stock were obtained, owes and lambs making from 16s 3d to IDs, hoggets 11s lOd to 12s 2d, fat hoggets 14s oa, fat cows £7 Is, cows with calves at foot £i) 11s. forward cows £o 15s, and halfdraughts £l3 10s ro £l7 10s. Thera was a large attendance at tho sale, and tho competition was very keen. A poultry farmer of Taonui is exhibiting in Palmerston a dozen white .Leghorn eggs-which actually weigh 21b Soz. At tiio present value of eggs, this moans that eggs like tho above are only about half the price of meat, and then with only a fraction of the waste. At tho Wanganui Show n dozen eggs were exhibited which weighed 21b Ooz, while a dozen duck eggs shown turned the scale at 21b 1-loz. These great weights are a striking argument in favour of soiling by weight, a principle which has recently been so successfully instituted in connection with poultry. Tho urgency for a proper post office for Palmerston is to be brought under tho notice of the member for tho district, Mr AY. T. Wood, by tho Chamber of Commerce. Mr J. M. Johnston has appealed to the Council to more in the matter.

A further 10,000 trout fry have beou released in the 'Fitzberbert streams by the local representatives of the Acclimatisation Society, Messrs Hart and Laroombc. Despite the attention which has been given by Messrs Hart and Larcombo to the stocking of the rivers of the district, anglers are meeting with persistently bad luek, ’ The reason no doubt for this is the boisterous weather experienced in the district recently, together with tho flooded state of the rivers. Tho rough weather and high winds also played havoc with some orchards, and the yield of fruit in the Manawatu this year will ho only a fraction of what it should be. The Chamber of Commerce has set up a committee in order to secure a Customhouse bond for Palmerston. Mr J. A. Nash introduced the subject at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening, and urged tho need' of such au important convenience for the merchants and traders of Palmerston and the surrounding townships. Those locally interested are prepared to submit a feasible scheme for its maintenance, which should remove all objection on the' part of the Government Department. A winter dairy show is at last ensured for Palmerston. With the presence of a largo exhibition hall cm the show grounds of tho Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association and tho decision of tho National Dairy Association to amalgamate with the former in promoting a winter exhibition, there is every indication that a show worthily representative of tho dairy industry will take place during next winter. It is to bo hoped that tho Butter and Cheese-makers’ Association will hold its annual meeting during the course of the show, and that tho members will combine with the National Dairy Association in holding a conference on the lines of that held in Palmerston last year, tho most important gathering of dairymen which lias yet taken place in the odony. One thing remains to make the proposed show a success —that tho A. and P. Association should remember for once that its object is something mor'o than conserving tho interests of stock-breeding. It is probable that the most attractive factory butter competitions yet arranged in the colony will bo tho feature of the show.
