Mr Edward O’Connel, ono of tlio West Coast pioneers, who arrived at Hokitika in 18C7, died recently at tho Kiiinara Hospital, aged sixty-seven years. Mr Henry Griffiths, .who died at the Westland Hospital last week, was a minor on tho Coast for over forty years. Ho was a Welshman, and was seventy years of age. Mr Pickering, of the Westport branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been granted leave of absence for six weeks, and his duties will bo discharged during that time by Mr Thompson, of tho Wellington office. Tho typist who lias been engaged by Mr Justice Deuniston to record tho evidence in criminal cases at tho present sessions of tho Supreme Court is Mr H. .13. Lo Grove, junior, who has already been engaged in somewhat similar worn in Magistrates’ Courts. Mr A. B. Lindop, the recently appointed manager of the State coalmines, left for Westland'on Saturday to take over ohargo of tho mines. Mr J. Hayes, Inspecting Engineer, who has Been in charge of tho works for some time past, will return to Wellington upon handing over tho mines to Mr Lindop.
