I was prevented from entering this political contest until much of the field had already been won by others. The limits of the time available have rendered it impossible for me to adequately place before you my views and aims, New Zealand is my birthplace. In it I have spent my life, and to the educational advantages it offers to each young colonial I owe anything I have achieved. If, with your support, I gain the honour of sharing in the government of my native land, I shall esteem it the crowning distinction of my life, an honour which, I shall feel, demands from me, in the interests of my country, the best industry, skill and attention of which lam capable. I support tho policy of the present Government, feeling convinced, as I do, that a careful and courageous pursuit of ( that policy spells security with further prosperity. 1 have the honour to be.
