OBITUARY.

MR A. J, COTTER ILL. Special to the “Timeb.” NAPIER, September 3. Profound regret has been caused throughout Hawke’s Bay by tho death of AH- A. J. Cotterill, Crown Prosecutor, from pneumonia, the result of a chill, after about a week’s illness. Deceased was born in Colncy. Norfolk, .England, in 1818, and camo to this colony in 1851 with his father, tbo Into Rev G. Cottcrill, Canon of Christchurch. Ho was educated at Christ’s College, and studied law with Messrs Haninor and Harper, of Christchurch, being admitted to the Bar in 1873 by Mr Justice Grosson. In 1874 lie camo to Napier, and after managing tho business of tho lato Hon J. N. Wilson, M.L.C., then Crown Prosecutor, for about a year, ho entered into partnership witli him. This partnership was dissolved by Air Wilson retiring from practice in 1800, and in October, 1801, tho partnership which has sinco existed, Cotterill and Humphries, was formed. Air Cottcrill was appointed Crown Solicitor for Hawke’s Bay in 1877, and after .that till tho dissolution of tho then existing firm, practically all the Crown and other business passed through his hands. In 1877 Mr Cottcrill married Julia, daughter of tho lato Air Robert Stuart, first Mayor of Napier. Airs Cottcrill died in 1883. A family of four is left to mourn its loss—Aliss Helen Cottcrill and Messrs George, Keith and Basil. Goorgo was a lieutenant in tho Eighth New Zealand Contingent, and is now in England, having gone there from South Africa with tho Coronation Contingent. It was to this absent sou that the father with almost his last breath dictated a touching message of encouragement and affection. In tho death of Air Cotterill Hawke’s Bay has lost ono of its most valued residents, a gentleman whoso high character and blameless life won tho respect and admiration of all throughout the town and district.
