Tho College governors had’offered to provide secondary education for fifty pupils at a little under tho Government subsidy for high schools. Since the 1 meeting of citizens last night, which was ■ so poorly attended, the public bave risen . to the occasion manfully, and subscriptions towards tho fund for entertaining; the men have fairly poured in. All pro-1 vious occasions have been eclipsed in! this respect which may be taken aa an I indication that the war spirit still runs! high. When all is over, it will probably be agreed that the send-off of the Tenth was quite as hearty and demonstrative as was accorded previous contingents. The case of a young woman named Matilda Streeter, charged with forgery, provoked some comment from Mr Justice Denniston to-day. The accused bad pleaded guilty to altering a cheque by adding a figure to the amount for which, it was originally made out, and making a corresponding change in the body of the document. His Honor said the case was a most extraordinary one. The accused apparently came from good surgroundings, and bore a good CharacterThen she took the money and puc it away, and did not use it. On the other hand, the manipulation of the cheque had been carried out with' such skill that it appeared as if some other person were behind it. If, however, this had been the case the money would have been, handed ever to another. It was one of the most extraordinary instances of isolated crime that ever he met with. Taking all the circumstances into consideration, although reluctant to grant probation to persons charged with forgery, he thought no good would be done by sending the girl to gaol. She had restored the money and pleaded guilty; she would accordingly be admitted to probation for six months. MASTEETON, April 34.
