ACCIDENTS.

The Railway Department lias been advised of a fatal accident which occurred to Thomas Francis Nyhane, driver of the mail train from Now Plymouth, yesterday. ’Approaching a bridge soutli of Inglewood he was looking out of his cab, when his head struck the bridge, and he was killed instantaneously. An inquest Tvas held at Newman on Monday on the body of James Francis Dougherty, aged 22, who was drowned in the Makakahi stream last week. The evidence showed that deceased rode a horse into deep water, that the horse sank with its rider, and that Dougherty was thus drowned. He was unable to swim, but a further reason for the drowning was afforded by the discovery on the face of deceased of an injury caused by a heavy blow, no doubt received from the horse in its, struggles. Three men witnessed the mishap, but they could give no assistance,' being unable to swim. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. PBESS ASSOCIATION - . GREYMOUTH, March 11. Two men, Evan Williams and John Simmons, were killed in the Cobden quarry this afternoon by a large slip of stone and clay. Other workmen had a narrow escape. Men have been working by flare-lights all night at the scene of the fatality at Cobden quarry. It is not expected the bodies can be recovered before to-mor-row morning, if then. An inquest was held to-day on John George Hewitt, seven years of age, who shot himself last evening. The evidence given tended to show that deceased must have got a revolver from his brother’s cOat pocket. The coat was hanging on a nail 6ft from the ground. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attached to anyone.
