MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
SATURDAY, MARCH 8. (Before Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M.) ' Five first offending drunkards were convicted. William Brown and William Smith pleaded nob guilty to charges of theft of a bag of salt valued at 2s 6d, the property of Laery and Co. Evidence was given by George Brown, an employee of Laery and Co., that ho saw defendant Brown take a bag of salt and place it in Smith’s cart. Witness asked him if he had received an account for the saltj and he said “Yes,” but when asked to produce it he could not do so. Thnothy White saw Bfbwn enter the yard of Laery and Co., and interfere with some bags of salt. Witness hid himself from the view of defendant, and saw him place a bag of salt on his shoulder and take it into the street. John Mitchell stated that the alleged theft was reported to him by the storeman. Brown then came and offered to pay for the salt, but witness refused to accept payment of it. and sent for the police. Defendants wore eaclMined 20s, in default seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour. Thomas Green was charged with committing theft of an oilskin coat, valued at los, the property of Charles Stannard, at Ngahauranga. Defendant pleaded nob guilty, and on the application of his father, the case was remanded until tile 12th inst., to enable him to obtain legal advice. Bail was granted —accused in his owii recognisance of £2O and one surety of £2O.
George Carter, alias Hurley, alias Triggs, who was caught removing articles from tho store of Edward Wilkie, at Upper Hutt. on the 6th inst.., appeared before Mr H. E. Rawson. J.P., and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. /
